Today I turn 23. So, to celebrate this day I’ve taken a break from my usual ramblings about wartime Britain (scroll down for my earlier posts on these) to compile a list of the hallmark characteristics of my early 20s. Continue reading

This week, I headed to the British Library’s exhibition dedicated to the WW1 centenary, called ‘Enduring War: Grief, grit and humour’. As can be gathered from the name, this exhibition looks at the war from a personal perspective, exploring how individuals on both fronts coped with the horrors and uncertainties of war. ‘The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime’ – wartime British foreign secretary, Sir Edward Grey, on the eve of war
On the evening of 4th August I had come home from work in London only to grab my camera, a quick bite to eat, and then to go all the way back. Yes, on this evening I went to Westminster to see the lights go out – one of the main commemorations to mark 100 years since Britain’s entry into the war that changed the world. Continue reading

‘We cannot say with what eyes posterity will regard this museum nor what ideas it will rouse in their minds’ – King George V opening the Imperial War Museum on 9th June 1920

This meant a particularly sticky and uncomfortable long train journey from central London to my home in Essex. The tube was as hot as I’ve ever experienced, it recently being reported that temperatures underground are exceeding the limit of what would be legal to transport livestock. If only the same limits applied to us humans!
On top of this my other train home was annoyingly slow so as to protect rail infrastructure during the extreme heat. It was past five on a Friday and I needed only two things when I arrived home… a cool shower and a quick but delicious meal.
This is a healthy, simple yet tasty meal that only requires four main ingredients. Continue reading
2014 marks the centenary of the First World War. This event combined with the damning results of a survey (http://news.sky.com/story/1290279/fifth-of-brits-think-we-fought-wwi-to-stop-nazis) revealing that nearly one in five Britons confuse the events of WW1 with WW2 prompted me to start my blog honouring this time in my own little way… by exploring life on the Home Front through what was traditionally eaten at the time. Continue reading
